Visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi

Mosque Construction

I recall gazing at the construction of the Grand Mosque on my first visit to Abu Dhabi around 2003, back then the cityscape in the area was barren at best and there was no way to miss the huge construction being erected from the main road.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest Mosque in the U.A.E. and the eight largest in the World.

Architecturally speaking the main building is stunning, the predominantly white marble stone construction is a sight to behold making it a must visit if you happen to travel to this part of the Middle East.

You can find before and after photos of the construction of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in this article with photos by photographer Beno Saradzic.

Visiting the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque

A strict dress code is actively enforced at the entrance, female visitors should have their head and limbs fully covered, and male visitors need to wear pants and a shirt with short sleeves at the very least.

Also, appropriate behaviour is expected, no public displays of affection are tolerated in any way or form plus in case you were thinking of it, you can't treat the grounds as a photo session location or you will be asked to leave just like they did to famous singer Rihanna, who found out the hard way what's not allowed on her visit to the Islamic religious temple when she was requested to vacate the grounds for inappropriate behaviour and more recently Selena Gomez who was criticised on Twitter for posing for pictures at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque with her ankle shown. Sigh! when will the chiquitas learn to behave in public, huh?

There are few other interesting aspects about the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque that you might be interested in such as the mosque having the biggest carpet ever made in Iran and other facts along those lines. (As anyone that has spent more than five minutes in the U.A.E. would know, the Emiratis are obsessed with building or possessing the biggest and grandest of all things in existence, what's with that, huh? I'm sure Austrian psychotherapist Alfred Adler would have a fitting theory to explain the cause behind such behaviour)

In any case, you can read more about the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque on their official website here.

I know what you must be thinking by now: "Now, now, Mario, enough rambling, where are the photos?" So without any further ado here are a few photos of the mosque from my latest quick visit to Abu Dhabi, hope you like them!
